WWII Veterans
For all veterans who participated, the flight, ground transportation, scooters and wheelchairs, meals and other necessities were free of charge. Local volunteers, or guardians, accompanied the veterans on the trip to assist with any physical or health needs and limitations.
HonorAir provided three one-day trips in the fall of 2006 and three more in 2007. Our sixth and last trip was on September 22, 2007, and was the anniversary of our first trip the year before. The participants traveled by chartered aircraft from Asheville, NC to Reagan Washington National Airport, where they boarded motor coaches and traveled to the Washington Mall to tour the World War II Memorial and enjoyed a box lunch. There was an opportunity to tour the Korean War Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, and Iwo Jima Memorials. If time permited, a short visit or slow, respectful coach tour of Arlington National Cemetery on their return to Reagan Airport was be made.
All Henderson County World War II veterans were encouraged to participate in the HonorAir trips, and all who wanted and were able to go were accommodated--636 in all!
